What i start up my iMac 27 I get a dialog box welcoming me to iPhoto. I do not use iPhoto and have no intention of using iPhoto. it drives me mad, there seems no way that I can get rid of it. Has anybody any ideas?

Sounds like you've set it to start when you log in. Right click on the icon in the dock and uncheck that option.

Go to Apple Menu/System Preferences/Users and Groups.
Select your user account, you'll see two tabs (password and login). Go to the login tab. Unlock the lock if necessary. Remove any login items that you don't use.
