Touch ID-required to hold during Apple pay transaction?

I tried to use Apple Pay at a local McDonald's drive through. The problem was, the payment terminal was completely out of my reach.

The clerk wanted me to hand my phone to her, so she could touch it to the terminal. As I understand it, I have to be holding my finger on the Touch ID button during the transaction for it to go through. She claimed no one else had a problem with handing over their phone for similar transactions.

Am I mistaken that I have to keep touching the ID button during the entire Apple Pay transaction?

You're correct. It does require your finger on the ID button for obvious secpurity reasons. Clerk does not understand ApplePay.

Hi

That is not necessarily required. Apple Pay can be used in two ways:

You can hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader with your finger resting on the Touch ID sensor, or;
You can prepare in advance to pay with Apple Pay:
- Double-press the Home button (or open Wallet if you do not have that shortcut method enabled), select your preferred card and place your finger on the Touch ID sensor until you see "Hold Near Reader to Pay".
- You then have 60 seconds to pay by holding the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader.
- During this time, you do not need to keep your finger on the Touch ID sensor or to place it there again.

The clerk was asking you to use the second method. However, you may prefer that they extend the contactless reader towards you, so that you can hold your iPhone to it yourself.
