iMac startup freeze after update to OsX El Capitan

Hello,

After I installed the OsX El Capitan update on my iMac 27" (1TB hard-disk), it systematically freezes at startup, with the black screen and the apple visible but absolutely no progress in the horizontal bar below. Only solution is to re-install the OsX El Capitan update again from scratch. This happens systematically, always the same (so, after re-installing, next time I'll shut down the iMac won't start again and new re-installation is necessary).

FYI, I also installed the same update on my MacBook Air (with SDD memory) and it starts up fine (although I see some awkward behavior in some situations, but nothing unsurmountable so far).

Thanks for your help in solving the problem.

There may be more causes.

Try this:

shutdown, wait 10 seconds, then start and immediately when you hear the startup chime press and hold the Shift key, keep holding until you see the grey progress bar, let go; the start up (Safe Mode) will take considerably more time than a normal startup. Let it start completely. Then shutdown and start normally.

If this does not help: do it again, and in the Safe Mode download Etrecheck.app (www.etresoft.com) and run it, post the list here.

I'm afraid I have to re-open this thread 😟

After one day off, today the computer wouldn't start again, now not even in safe mode... tried twice, to no avail. So now I am downloading and re-installing the OS for the nth time (am posting from my MacBook), then I shall run (in normal mode) the Etrechck.app and post the list here.

In about 1 hour or so I guess.

Should anyone have a suggestion for proceeding otherwise (not being able to start in Safe mode is really worrying), please do post, thanks.

Hi !

Same problem (but the start page is white, not black !)

The chime, and apple, and the progress bar don't even start (nor move)...

The "shift" method don't work (or I haven't wait enough...)

The only thing which work is CMD+R (recovery mode) : but I try to resetPassword, repair the drive, etc nothing works.

It's the second time this happens to me this week : The first time, I reinstall OS 10.6 (snow leapard ! from my 2009 DVD install) and erase my harddrive.

Then make 10.11 update, recover my file from TimeMachine (and account).

I have 2 admin account and I got lots of problem with my password (not recognize when I have El capitan back !!!) my "password trousseau" didn't accept my account password (had to destroye it and recreate another one, and still had problem with the system and session password)

After everything reconfigure (mail, app...) I turn it off, went to work, and last evenning : NO START UP AGAIN !!!

Help !

This is probably an oversight on Apple's part when compiling El Capitan for consumer use. As it is still the original version and it seems these types of threads are flooding the forums, I'd imagine a fix will come at some point. You've mentioned you downgraded your OS X. This is also something that I will do as I have the same issue as numerous other people do. I suggest to hold onto a downgraded version of OS X until a fix is made. I find it a bit tedious (and I imagine you do also) to have to reinstall El Capitan every time you turn on your Mac just to use it (sometimes just for 5 minutes) and to repeat the process over and over.

Before you start doing anything:

In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove ALL entries with the minus sign underneath. Then RESTART.

1: Tap Tun vpn: Uninstall. Find another vpn if you really want vpn

read some about this here: http://www.thesafemac.com/staying-safe-on-public-wifi/#more-1913

2. AntiVirus Software: uninstall what you have,

and if not, remove the remnants: in Finder MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons: delete the rapiback.plist. Then open the Trash, and select the plist, and while holding the CTL key, click it and choose "delete immediately" (thanks Leonie).

(I think it is from Avira AV software).

3: Kies/AndroidFileTransferAgent: Uninstall. You do not need that, and incompatible: lots of references here.

4. Eltima Syncmate: Uninstall. I am not 100% sure about this, but afaik, it is at least counterproductive.

5. Mozy/MotyHome: Uninstall, thee are better ways to backup your iDevices, use iTunes in the mac.

6. Uninstall fuspredownloader.

7. Uninstall OSXFuse: when there is software that needs that, uninstall that.

8. I am not sure if Keeper Password Manager is 10.11 compatible.

9. GoogleDrive may cause issues, I am not sure whether that is solved already.

Same for Citrix.

10. MacintoshHD->Library->InternetPlug-ins: delete the two AdobePDFViewer plugins: counterproductive and the built in PDF viewer is at least as good.

General Remarks: in my opinion you should not need Java (I have gotten rid of it two years ago); you also do not need Flashplayer: see other threads for the alternative; I am very unhappy about Chrome (not safe and resource eater) the new Safari is faster and safe; never start AdobeSourceSynchroniser app.

Long list sorry. Post if you have questions about this

Thanks a lot ex for your time and effort.

I am sincerely very much afraid nah a number of things you are suggesting me to delete are absolutely necessary for my work. These include e.g.:

- Mozy/MozyHome

- Keeper Password

- Google Drive

- Citrix

Regarding Java and Flashplayer, they are indeed required by a number of sites that I systematically use.

All the above are also installed on my MacBook Air (theoretically less resourceful, but with SDD drive, instead of HD) and work fine. And all have been working fine for long, until upgrading to El Capitán (but have done so on the MacBook Air too and all keeps working).

Finally, not sure if performing a RESTART won't make me just return to need for re-installing the OS all over again...

Isn't there an easy way for returning to Yosemite for a start?

Thanks again,

Pedro

Pedro:

a. check again if Mozy is 10.11 compatible, but even when not it is probably not the cause of your issue.

b. Java on sites, hmmmm, I am not very confident that it is not hurting. If you mean Javascript: that is something else totally, I meant Java as in SystemPreferences. The two have nothing to do with each other.

If you mean Java, in Safari->Preferences->Security->Plugin settings, set all to ask and you will see what needs what. If never asked: throw it out.

c. Keeper password: I have no information just asked you to check.

d. GoogleDrive used to disturb the system much, but as long as it is not in the LoginItems, you can start (and quit) by hand, I have no long term experience, because I switched to other cloud services, that have a known earning model, and that have also total encryption also on the transmission.

e. Citrix, I do not have experience but that it was not always sure that it is compatible after an OS upgrade.

f. Flashplayer: more security holes by the day, I uninstalled it completely.

The few website that still need it (old hat, since almost all is HTML5 now) can be played (almost) always by doing following: In Safari->Preferences->Advanced check "show Develop menu in Safari menu" then in the Safari menu select Develop, and select User Agent, and select Safari iOS8-iPad.

When this is too much for you install the Safari Plugin ClickToFlash. Using that protects you at least a bit.

I suppose that after emptying the Login items (see earlier post) restarting will be a bit easier.

an then point 2 is very urgent. The point1 VPN is (just not well programmed and very probably blocking in 10.11): Turn it OFF now, before starting with the process. That should help already a lot. When not, it should help starting in the Safe Mode, where you can do the rest.

There is a way to go back to Yosemite (takes some time, but when you do it make it a "clean install"), but most of my points are also necessary in Yosemite....
