change login background from sleep mode

What is it called when you put the computer on sleep mode and you reenter the password to login? Because it is apparently different on mac. I already managed to change the login background when you login out manually but it is still a grey image after just having it on sleep mode. I am not sure if there is a difference, thats why I am having trouble explaining it.

I use the new el captain update btw.
