Only a handful of songs by artists are displaying in my itunes library!

i can only find all of the songs by an artist if i search for them in the search bar! I've never had this problem before i got the new itunes and I have not changed any setting etc. This is so frustrating because i thought i had lost a couple of songs for no reason so i started downloading the mising one again until i realised they were already there but just in the background! Can anyone help?
