How do I know if I have a virus - tapsnake?

I received a pop-up today about a site I visited may have put a virus on my Mac? The message appeared to be from Apple but I am suspicious. I forced quit the page. While I think that is a scam and didn't follow it, I wanted to confirm with much more educated minds than mine. Thanks!
