Cannot set up an IMAP mail account on Yahoo mail. Auto set up defaults to a POP broadband incoming server with no way to change it. Yahoo IMAP worked with Yosemite and worked for several weeks after upgrading to El Capitan until IMAP account stopped connecting to Yahoo server.

Set it up again, but this time make a deliberate mistake in the password.
It will come back and tell you it could not make the connection, and offer manual setup via additional screens, one of which shows the pop vs IMAP choice.

Now cannot send mail. Rejected by smtp server I set up manually. Server is correct for my Yahoo account...rejecting sender address which is my email address with Yahoo. El Capitan is frustrating!!

Inside mail, use
Window > Connection Doctor ...
... to check the status of each connection (remember that sending and receiving servers are separate).
Click on a Red light to go directly to the configuration for that server. Check that all settings are correct, and that there is a password entered.
(Mine talks to server : smtp.mail.yahoo.com
and uses port 465 and [√] SSL is checked).
I get green lights and my set up is same as yours. New mail and replies stay in outbox.
Mail Preferences > Accounts
Select the account in question. about 2/3 of the way down the pane is the parameter:
OutGoing Mail Server: __________
Be sure that is not set to "none" or is blank, and that it is set to the server you intend if you have multiple accounts being served by Mac Mail.
It is set to correct servers. incoming server is map.mail.yahoo.com Outgoing server is smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Still being rejected by server when sending mail but I am receiving incoming mail on Mac mail.
I believe its a problem with El Capitan...needs a serious update to fix this and many issues others are having.
