.MOV files not playing properly in QuickTime Player v. 10.0

I have a Mac OS X 10.6.8. I use QuickTime Player v.10.0. Videos taken with my iPad or iPhone are very choppy when viewed in QuickTime Player v.10.0. If posted on Facebook, they are fine... I would like to know if should change media player, or do I need an upgrade?
