Quitting Safari when something is downloading

Okay, so say I am downloading the new Office 2016 for Mac. Can I quit Safari and will it continue to download? And if yes, will this make my download process quicker? I use a MacBook Air, 11-inch, Early 2014, 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5 Processor. I am on OS 10.11 Beta.
