Oct 13, 2015 2:40 PM in response to jm3songsby fox_m,I believe the highest version you can go in Mountain Lion is FCPX 10.0.9. Of the 10.0.x versions, 10.0.9 would be the best version. I'm pretty sure you would need to upgrade to OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) to run FCPX 10.1 and you really need to check your hardware compatibility for FCPX before installing any version. (Graphics card compatibility for Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 - Apple Support)

Oct 14, 2015 6:08 AM in response to jm3songsby Luis Sequeira1,What fox said. On the other hand, if you do have compatible hardware, you will be missing out on a whole lot of capabilities if you stick to 10.0.9.
This software is two years old and the progress in 10.1 and 10.2 is huge.

Oct 14, 2015 6:15 AM in response to jm3songsby Russ H,My question is whether you already have a version of FCP X on your system, If you do, you could update to 10.0.9/ Or you could update the OS and get the 10,2 version at no charge.
If you do not have a version of FCP X installed, you will not be able to update or purchase the app since the only version available as a new purchase is 10.2.

Oct 14, 2015 6:57 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1by jm3songs,Well, since I missed Yosemite on this particular iMac, I guess I'll have to wait awhile before going to El Capitan so that all bugs and fixes can get worked out with Pro Tools, Final Cut, etc. So right now, it seems I'll be in a holding pattern with Final Cut Express. I don't believe I can upgrade from Express to FCPX 10.0.9 anyhow....smh.

Final Cut Pro X is a completely different application. The only way to buy it is from the Mac App Store, and Apple only sells the current version, AFAIK.
That would be 10.2.2 and require at least Yosemite. If you can't upgrade from Mountain Lion you may have to contact Apple directly. Of course, there is the option to keep using FCE.

Oct 14, 2015 6:58 AM in response to jm3songsby Russ H,Suggestion: Create a bootable volume by partitioning your current drive (or using a spare drive) and downloading 10.11. Then download the trial version of FCP X, which will be version 10.2.2. Test it to see whether it meets your needs.

Oct 15, 2015 9:08 AM in response to Luis Sequeira1by jm3songs,Thanks...that is what I didn't want to hear, but suspected that was the case. I appreciate your time. For now, since Yosemite is no longer offered on the app store, I'll continue running FCE.
