How do I open/read a pdf document in iBooks after uploading it to iPad?

My Mac, iPad, and iPhone do not have the same iBook PDFs which I've uploaded. That is, I'm trying to sync a file between all three. Each of these devices has a different result. iPhone has nothing in that category. iPad has three files in that same category. Mac has one.
