27" iMac (end 2012) running painfully slow all of a sudden

Hey!

3 days ago, my 27" iMac, end 2012, started running slow. Mouse control is almost impossible. Applications seem to be running ok, but I can't control them. I though it was a mouse problem, restored batteries but nothing happened.

It started happening since the system upgraded to Mavericks, but I'm not positive this is what caused the problem or just a coincidence. I updated it to El Capitan hoping it might solve the problem, but also, nothing happened. I have backed everything up, but running a disk repair the diagnosis revealed no disk damage.

I also ran Etrecheck, here is the result:

EtreCheck version: 2.5.4 (214)

Using antivirus software on a Mac is a HUGE mistake. There are no viruses for OS X so it not only is completely unnecessary it is a waste of system resources and possible the cause of your problem. OS X does not need antivirus, cleaning or any third party maintenance utilities to run well. There are a few pieces of malware out there but they are easily avoided by using a little common sense such as :

Locate the developers instructions for uninstalling Avast, after using them to uninstall restart the computer in Safe Mode to clear some caches and then restart normally and test. I suspect your performance will be back.

Hey rkaufmann87. Thanks for the reply! I installed the antivirus after I started getting some adware on my mac, such as ask.com and some funky stuff I don't know where it came from.

Since my 10 year old daughter uses the computer as well to play online games, she perhaps clicked somewhere she shouldn't.

I contacted Apple Support and ran disk repair again, things now seem to be working! Let's hope it stays that way!

Thanks!

  1. Gatekeeper is one of a Mac's most fundamental built-in defenses against malware intrusion and other garbage, and it has been disabled on that Mac. I strongly recommend re-enabing it. To learn how to do that read OS X: About Gatekeeper - Apple Support.
  2. Just like any other system-altering garbage, adware or what Apple calls "ad-injection software" doesn't get installed without your consent. Programs such as "Avast" can do nothing to prevent you from doing that. In fact, Avast's recent versions install what can only be described as adware itself. Don't use those things. To learn how to protect yourself and your Mac from the threat of adware read How to install adware.
  3. If your 10 year old daughter is using your Mac, at the very least you should create her own account for her use, and don't allow her (or anyone else, for that matter) to administer your computer. Consider making hers a "managed" account, which is appropriate for children. Read OS X El Capitan: Set up users on your Mac and OS X El Capitan: Set up parental controls.
  4. Research updates for both your Wacom tablet and Adobe Creative Cloud. Crash reports for both are an indication of something amiss.
  5. Google products including Google Chrome, Google Talk, Google Drive etc. will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. If you must use them, expect a very limited economic life from your hardware investment.
  6. As others already noted "CleanMyMac" must be removed if you expect your Mac to work as designed, but its uninstallation instructions are incomplete. Read below.

To remove CleanMyMac 3 itself, use its Uninstaller module, followed by these additional steps:

Remove the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

  • To navigate to that file, copy and paste the following line into the Finder's Go menu > Go To Folder...

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

  • Locate the following file and drag it to the Trash:
  • com.macpaw.CleanMyMac3.Scheduler.plist

    • Then, open  (Apple menu) > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
    • Select the item CleanMyMac3 Menu
    • Click the [—] (minus) button.
    • Restart your Mac.

Beware that reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system. To recover from the effects of having used it to modify OS X, the additional software you require and the essential files you need, follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new User Account whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • To erase and install OS X read How to reinstall OS X on your Mac.
        • Follow the instructions in that document under Erase your drive and install OS X.
        • Then, follow the procedure in Move your content to a new Mac.
        • When asked how you want to transfer your information, select Transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk.
        • Under Select the Information to Transfer, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
      • "Non-essential software" is a broad category that includes but is not limited to third party "cleaning", "maintenance", and "anti-virus" products.
