contact file blank

Opening my contact list shows (0) cards. 100s of cards are gone. OS 10.9.5. Last software updates were Safari 9.0 and iTunes both in September. Not very computer literate and have no idea why or how my Contacts got wiped out. Contacts is v 8.0.
