Apple mail app shows intermittent "cannot get mail" message

I have this message pop up periodically on my iPhone as well as on my iPad, both running Apple mail app. I have several Hotmail and GMail accounts set up in them (different accounts on iPhone and iPad). The message reads:

Cannot Get Mail

The connection to the server failed.

Any idea why this is happening and how to fix it?
