i am unable to backup or check for updates through my pc what do i do?

whenever i plug in my iphone or my ipad i am unable to sync them with my computer. what is there that i could do to get this fixed

iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2

We are not mind readers. We are not looking over your shoulder. We can not see what you're doing or what is happening? You need to explain, in detail what steps you're taking, and what happens.


Are you using a PC or a Mac?

Do you have iTunes installed?

What version of iTunes do you have installed (do NOT say "the latest version". Give us a version number)


Is iTunes open when you plug in the device?
