I want the green resize button to resize a window and not put me in full screen mode. I know I can hold down the option key to resize, but I very rarely want full screen mode. I want to see all my windows as I'm typically working with 3, 4, or 5 at a time. Is there any way to make the default behavior "resize" instead of "full screen"? I want it to work the way it used to work for many years.

So have you tried mousing over the right lower corner of the window (your pointer will change to arrows) and sizing it manually? I've been using that for years.
That's manual. Ain't got time for that. The green button resize works like magic. In Finder it resizes to the smallest window size for which all icons are visible. Great feature. I miss that.
Well, ok - then you'll have to tell Apple Engineers of your request. I suggested an alternate solution as it maybe takes just a fraction of a second longer to hit the other corner.
If I did not care about those hundreds of fractions of a second, I'd be using Microsoft Windows.
Ever get a solution to this problem? I agree with you; this change *****. Going full screen "make this one window take over my screen" is pretty much the opposite of "resize this window to smallest size that shows all functions" so I can get stuff done in a lot of windows at once.
instead of holding the options key, just double click on a blank area of the title bar. e.g. to the left or right of the address bar in Safari, or to the right of the tabs in Chrome.
Thanks, I had changed that setting from the default to "minimize" window (like it did back in the olden-days). I changed it back to "zoom" and that works perfectly for me so far.
The double click in the title bar just sends things to the dock for me. I had "Double-click a window's title bar to minimize" checked in the system preferences for the dock. (Don't know why I had that checked. The yellow button "-" already sends things to the dock.) I unchecked that and now double click in the title bar does the old minimize/maximize trick. Cool. I just have to retrain myself to do that.
