I downloaded el capitan from the app store and once the download was complete nothing happened.
It didn't give me the option to restart my macbook pro or anything and now whenever i try to access the
App store it doesn't open, it just stays blank and on the activity monitor it says "app store not responding"
any help will be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance!

When you download an OS X upgrade file, it should be placed in your Applications folder. Generally it then opens and waits for instructions from you. It does not automatically install the upgrade. Look for "Install OS X El Capitan" in your Applications folder and double click on it.
