Available storage difference between iPhone and iTunes?

Hi,

When I look at the capacity on my iPhone it says "Capacity 12 Gb" and "Available 182Mb".

When the same phone is connected to iTunes it says on the bar at the bottom showing usage "1.22Gb free".

Why the difference?
Recently I've been getting out of memory messages on the iPhone too...?
