"Require password" on sleep/screensaver is broken

Just upgraded to El Capitan, and my MacBook Pro will no longer lock. Security & Privacy panel is set to "Require password immediately after sleep or screen saver begins" (see attached).

However, the login prompt is no longer appearing when exiting the screen saver or opening my laptop after putting it to sleep the night before. Manually putting it to sleep and waking it also does not trigger login. I do not seem to have any way to lock my computer right now *at all*.

Potential solution: I opened Find my iPhone [Mac] on another device and remotely locked my problematic laptop. After unlocking it (which resulted in 3 [!] startup/loading bars), the password requirement appears to be functioning normally again.

I can't imagine this is the most efficient solution.

Here's a weird solution. I had been working on a problem where hot corners wouldn't start the screensaver and of course then I couldn't lock if I never got to the screensaver.

The answer I found (which worked for me) was to change the hot corner to something other than screensaver, reboot, and then change it back to screensaver. Then hot corners started working, as did requiring a password immediately after screensaver or sleep.

Strange...

Thanks so much for the Workaround, i had the same problem and after following these steps the issue no longer happens! 😀

Although is a very time-consuming solution, Apple should be aware of this serious issue

I have this problem too, and none of these workarounds are fixing it. Basically, requiring a password when the computer wakes in any form (either from screensaver or from closing the lid, etc) is just not working.

I am on El Capitan 10.11.3

This screen lock issue has affected Mac OS X in every version since the very beginning nearly 15 years ago. There are reports of it here in Apple Discussions going very far back. I long, long, long ago stopped trusting this feature to work.

Instead of using the screen lock, go to the fast user switching menu and select "Login window...". That will bring the login window to the front. Then put your Mac to sleep. The login window will still be there after wake.
