How do I NOT display recipients email addresses?

When sending mail to a group I would like to NOT show all the recipients email addresses for security reasons. Unticking the box in Composing/Addressing/show all addresses does NOT seem to work. It seems essential to mail TO myself, and BCC to the group, but I cannot see this instruction anywhere.

Unticking the box appears to display only the name, but by clicking on this name the address is revealed, so what was the point?

I am currently contravening the Data Protection Act in this way, and would appreciate some help.

That's still the thing to do. It's just in a different place. There's a subtle menu up by the "paper airplane" send icon that allows you to show or hide the cc, bcc, reply-to, and priority fields.

Thanks for the reply, but perhaps I didn't clearly explain the problem. I wish to ensure that all the email addresses are not readable by the RECIPIENTS.

It is quite wrong, and in fact illegal in the UK, to send out email addresses in this way. (That's how Spam happens)

Surely what you are suggesting does not change that? At the moment I am displaying only the BCC field when composing, and this contains only the Group name. I also Mail To myself to receive a copy as sent to the Group. The CC address field is hidden, i.e. not selected

Are you also saying that unticking the box in Preferences/Composing/Addressing/Show all the addresses/ does, or does not work now. It certainly isn't working consistently for me. A secondary question about this is whether this applies to a Group when it is being CREATED, or to the mail when it is being composed? I feel that my results are inconsistent, for sometimes the recipient sees "To undisclosed recipients", and sometimes a list of names.

Your help appreciated.

The idea is to enable and use the BCC field (putting a dummy address or your own in the "TO:" field). Unless your email server is severely broken, no recipient will see the contents that was in the BCC field when you were composing the message, so it doesn't matter what it contains. The "Show all the addresses" setting should be completely irrelevant.

The above is assuming you are using SMTP to transmit the messages. If you use some non-SMTP path (maybe something Outlook-related), your results may be different.

Thanks again for your effort.

I confirm that I am using SMTP, and that all else seems to be functioning correctly. This problem has only come to light because we are trying to tighten-up on security. I am truly fed-up with SPAM messages and seem to relate them directly to the occasions that whole lists of names have been sent out using the TO field.

Your answer is simple and to-the-point, and must be right. I shall persevere and see what I am doing wrong.

How much easier life would be if NOT displaying email addresses of Group members were the Default setting, for no one seems to understand what they are doing when theuy use the TO field.

😊
