Does CS3 run on El Capitan ?

Hello,

I have 10 iMac running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and CS3.

I would like to buy ten more iMac. They will eventually run El Capitan, and I would like to use my other licenses of CS3 on the new iMac, so that 20 people will be able to work with CS3.

Anyone knows if CS3 is going to work on El Capitan ?

thank you

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

If you still want to use CS3, I would suggest to wait on upgrading to El Capitan. Wait until everybody is happy.

I have an iMAC and have been running CS3 on Yosemite (with a plug in I downloaded long time ago). It's been fine, perfect. All that until I upgraded to El Capitan. Now none of my CS3 applications open. In Photoshop, I got the message, "Adobe Photoshop not open in this computer". I've been in every website looking for answers.

I'll go on details:

I upgraded to El capitan on Saturday (I shouldn't). Right away, upon trying to open Photoshop CS3, it asked me to first download Java 6 to keep legacy. It worked fine until Sunday. I was working on a project but had to leave, so I shut down my Mac, came back about an hour and a half later, turn on the Mac to continue my work and Adobe Suite CS3 did not open anymore, exactly 24 hours after I upgraded to El Capitan.

Searching for answers, I found out I was not the only one with that problem. Many users are even having problems with CS6 !! One solution on the Apple community suggested to downgrade to Yosemite. For that I need first to erase El Capitan. I started to follow the steps but got stuck on the 2nd one (no alterations on the Mac yet), when one of my windows did not match what the step-by-step solution explained. I'm not too good at some technical stuff, I know my limits, so I decided to stop there.

I also know there will be a fix coming from Apple. They always help, I'll just have to wait.

Probably trying and install El Cap is the best way to solve the problem and know the truth, but, as a reply to all of you, I must say I work in a school and there is not much money available, and that is the reason why we're trying to find an arrangement that suits everyone.

So that is also why we'd like to stick to CS3, for buying a CS6 or paying a CC license would be enormously expensive for a school, despite Adobe education packages offers.

@woodmeister50

I'm not sure what you talking about when you speak of "the new subscription model".

If you mean the CC subscription model, it would be enormously expensive for a school with hundreds of users (students) to pay for monthly access.

@JimmyCMPIT

sorry but my english is not good enough to let me understan what you meant by:

"while I finally got Ps Ai and Id to work (CC2015) in 10.11 my acrobat is boned and an Adobe sr. Tech wants me to buy a new HD because "there may be a compatibility with another application or file on another partition" so yay adobe, this is what $30 a month buys you."

anyway thanks to everyone trying to help

I had issues with 10.11 and all of the Creative Cloud 2015 suite. Any application I clicked on failed with an error 1 or an error 6

Ps (Photoshop)

Ai (Illustrator)

Id (InDesign)

but after much deletion, process stopping and file renaming and ultimately deleting I got those three applications to work by repeated uninstall, re-download, re-install,so hours of lost time trying to get them to function

At this time Acrobat still will not work and I've had four adobe technicians try to fix this,

the last tech I spoke to who was supposedly a senior employee suggested I install a brand new hard drive and then install 10.11 on it and then install CC 2015 because another disk partition on the drive might be the cause. The drive I have in there now is fine, they can't fix this.

I'm telling you this because some might suggest upgrade to the latest and greatest and you might be problem free, just pay Adobe their monthly fee and keep using their software, however this is not my experience with Adobe at this time and I'm sharing that information with you as something to consider.

Yay Adobe is sarcasm, their tech support could not make a bowl of Ice Cream Soup as far as I'm concerned.

I found this quote on Adobe on this page https://www.adobe.com/products/cs6.html

(expect to get the "Hard sell" for Creative Cloud as they really don't want to support CS6):

Yes, you can still buy CS6 products by calling an Adobe call center, but why would you? The features in Creative Cloud will take your creativity further, with more ways to create, collaborate, and share. To purchase by phone, call 800-585-0774.

It runs fine on my new MacBook Pro running Yosemite. It will not run at all on my 2011 iMac that I upgraded to Yosemite. Because I needed CS3 on the iMac more than I needed Yosemite, I reinstalled Snow Leopard (yippee!!) and loaded everything from my backup.

I might find a substitute for Photoshop for my needs, but I don't want to give up InDesign and Acrobat. I might have to skip El Capitan for a while. I do not want Adobe's Creative Cloud.

I was perfectly able to find the italian correct number, but my technical problem is not that one.

My problem is that a school has not enough money to buy all the new iMac machines they would need for 30 people classes, and to pay for CC for every student.

So we have to find a different solution for students so that they can learn using this kind of software and iMac machines.

That's why we ares till using version 3 of CS.

Maybe you will find it weird or think that Italy is a poor country or something like that, but hey... is Apple only for the rich ones ?

😐

Maybe Apple doesn't want people in schools using their products.

I don't know and I don't think this is the right place to discuss this.

Anyway if someone working for Apple wants to take a note, this is the problem: Apple devices and Adobe software is far way too expensive for schools in Italy.

Know this and see if you are interested in doing something.

Anyway thanks to all people helping.

apple offers educational discounts for their hardware, certainly here (UK) and the United States so I hope they would offer the same to other countries.

i don't know about Adobe but it would be worth getting in touch with them to enquire, they probably do multiple licences for work/ education establishments,

which should work out cheaper than single licences.

good luck.

Living in an area which is not covered by the CC versions of Adobe products I have been in quite a lot of trouble recently.

I feel Adobe is one rude SOB who is ruthlessly taking advantage of its monopole position.

I have been trying to install the CS3 (legal disc version that I've actually bought with real money) on two Macs running El Capitan.
The other one insists that it has already been installed and thus needs to be removed with its original installer....there is no CS 3 on that computer!

The other one does not even bother to start the installer.
I have been trying to install Java Runtime but on the first computer it does not compute at all.
On the second, I do not know yet.

I have Adobe CS3 (using Photoshop, & Illustrator) and want to run it on el Capitan.

I can do the tasks as shown in this YouTube, but it approaches my limits. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdNa60_fC1Y&feature=youtu.be This process looks much easier than any other option. I don't want to spend more money or time learning a new photoshop, just want to use my CS3 asap.

I have downloaded the Legacy Java from Apple:

===== from Download Java for OS X 2015-001 =======

Java for OS X 2015-001 installs the legacy Java 6 runtime for OS X 10.11 El Capitan, OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.9 Mavericks, OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and OS X 10.7 Lion.

This package is exclusively intended for support of legacy software and installs the same deprecated version of Java 6 included in the 2014-001 and 2013-005 releases.

============

I don't know if the current Java is necessary; but it appears that I rather than adding capabilities of an older Java, am replacing the newer Java with an older Java.

Can anyone offer reasons that I should NOT overwrite the current Java with this legacy Java? Goal is to use my CS3 today (under 10.11.2) same as yesterday (10.7.5).....or mostly the same.

Thanks!

Jan 15, 2016 9:38 AM in response to JimmyCMPIT

MAybe I asked a question beyond my ability to comprehend the answer. Also I can't recall the sequence of the animals.

I upgraded from 10.7.5 to 10.11.2 yesterday and am trying to fix all the things it broke. Certainly needs a fix.

If ---- I replace the current Java with this legacy Java (just to run CS3) will I have other Java problems? Does 10.11.2 use Java for other essential stuff? Such that I should NOT mess with my current Java?

Jimmy you seem to be saying the CS3 won't run well anyway. Others seem to say it works OK.

LAntz thats good news the installer handles it. Do you think my CS3 (mainly Photoshop3) will run OK on El Capitan (and not cause other problems)?
