Connect iMac to MacMini

I have an iMac I bought in 2010 with a 2TB HDD. I would like to wipe the OS from this HDD and buy a MacMini with a 1.5TB HDD. Can I connect the new MacMini to the the old iMac and use it as a display for the MacMini AND will the MacMini recognize the iMac HDD as an External HDD?

If the 2010 iMac is a 27" iMac then yes, that will work if the MM has mini display port or Thunderbolt port. If it's a 21.5" no it will not. Please read Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Apple is pretty clear what will and will not work.
