How to turn off mobile data without using airplane mode

I have an iPhone 6 running iOS 9.0.2. Unless I am using wifi or mobile data I have airplane mode turned on as I understand (perhaps incorrectly) that it saves on the battery.

I normally turn off wifi or mobile data by turning on airplane mode, but I thought today that I would turn off mobile data by toggling off the mobile data button. But I found that all I seemed to do was turn off 4G (well 4G disappeared from after the carriers name) but I wasn't able to turn off mobile data completely.

Is there something in the settings I need to change, or is this normal?

In fact I have just turned off airplane mode and mobile data automatically turned on However when I go into settings, Mobile Data is described as being off. I thought it should have said that it was on.

I've now gone into Mobile Data in settings and the button is off. I've turned it on and 4G has now appeared after the carrier's name in the top left corner. So toggling the Mobile Data button on and off only seems to turn 4G on and off. Is this what should happen?

I'm a little confused and wondered if anyone can clarify this for me.

The answer is wrong, and you better correct this quickly before the FAA discover the bug:

Airplane means "No mobile network" at all - no voice, no SMS, no GPRS/EDGE no 4G - radio should be dead.

The FAA have approved of 2.4G Bluetooth and WiFi under certain terms, but should you turn on any emission at all in Airplane mode, this should be clearly visible, including the type of RF emission and strength that has been turned on. As it is, it is too easy now to use the phone to control remote devices that certainly can be designed to interfere with the flight. I suggest Apple reviews the answer provided and confirms that this is according to the US FAA rules and regulations.

The answer is not wrong. I suggest you re-read the answer and what it was dealing with exactly.

AirPlane mode turns off everything as it needs to. The FAA would have nothing to say.

The follow up answers above were dealing exclusively with what turning off only Mobile Data does. Not what Airplane mode did.

Turning off Mobile Data is not airplane mode, and as such just turns off Mobile Data as explained above.

Read the original question, and then the answers I gave in regards to the specific questions.

FYI, the thread is almost 2 years old.

First off, toggling Airplane mode and Wi-Fi all of the time is not saving you any battery really. Well, a little, since you are literally disabling the phone by doing it. Turning off cellular data does disable that, as you call 4G. That is the data signal for the device and is displayed in the status bar. The carrier name being visible just means that the cellular connection is still there and you can receive phone calls an regular SMS messages. That is turning off mobile data completely. Why do you thing it is not doing that? I'm slightly confused as well. What makes you think that cellular data is not turned off?

It may save you a very minimal amount of battery. but nothing really substantial.

Yes, this effectively turns off all antennas and radios on the iPhone, so no data, no voice or text service, and no wifi or bluetooth, unless you manually turn them on after turning on Airplane mode.

Why do you say this?

The 4G indicator is your mobile data. Turning it off means you no longer have access to the internet over your carriers network, l but it is unrelated to Voice and text messaging. Your carrier's name is still displayed, because you are still connected to Voice and text with them.

Yes, because that is exactly what mobile data refers to. It does not refer to your voice call or text service. Mobile Data is just internet access over your carriers network. It is offered at different speeds. 2G/Edge, 3G and 4G / LTE.

Turning off Mobile data, means you turn off your internet access, but can still make calls and send SMS text messages.
