Q: Mac fails to restart after installing El Capitan

I have just installed El Capitan on my iMac. It was working fine in Yosemite, but my Notes app wouldn't sync with my iPhone or iPad, and I discovered that this was because I had updated the iOS to the latest versions on the iPhone and iPad so needed to upgrade the iMac to El Capitan in order to sync.

I downloaded and installed El Capitan today, and Notes synced once more between all three devices. I then started using Photoshop, and noticed things were running very slow indeed, so I thought it might be good to do a restart.

DISASTER!

The iMac has been trying to restart for well over an hour now. All I see is a light grey screen with the dark grey Apple icon, and a stationary grey progress bar beneath. The progress bar is the type which starts to darken on the left side and then this dark area widens out as the process moves along.

The progress bar has no dark part at all. No progress whatsoever! I am stuck in a time warp, and restarting again just stakes me back to this same unmoving grey bar.

Can anybody help me to get my iMac working again, please?

Thank you,

Bruce

It sounds like you erased it properly. When you erase the hard drive in DU, it also reformats the drive. You may want to do a clean install of Yosemite without restoring your TM backup. After the install is done, run through the initial set up like it was a new computer and see how things run. If the computer works fine, try restoring you backup. This could be an issue related to something in your user account.

By doing a clean install without a Time Machine restore, we can narrow down if it is a system wide issue or just an issue with your user account.

I had the same issue after the second upgrade of EL Capitan my Imac would not complete the boot it gets stocked after restarting it ,other people have that issue as well, I spent time with apple tech support they couldn't help me, everything we tried was in vain, I had to take my Imac in the Apple store yesterday they are doing some testing to see what's wrong it's possible the stress that el capitan put on the computer damage the logic board, hard drive don't know yet, the computer was working perfectly find until the 2nd upgrade of El Capitan I can only boot on  safe mode, the hard drive was replaced by apple around two years ago.

My advise is that if you can avoid upgrading to  El Capitan avoid it, it's a piece of junk operating system you won't be missing anything or maybe just a big head ache El Capitan is nothing to write home about  I have owned Apple computers for many years and El Capitan is the worst operating system they have come up with I will let you know, if I am being treated fair by Apple I am aware that my issue with my Imac is not an isolated issue and Apple should take some responsibility for it
