Q: Safari keeps crashing/freezing after install of El Capitan

After the install of El Capitan, Safari 9.0 keeps locking up and or crashing.

I have a Mac Book Pro 15'' 2.3 GHz i7, 4GB Memory, 500 GB HD, iOS 10.11

When using Safari, I will have class work up and YouTube or iTunes playing. Before El Capitan it would do those processes with out a problem. Now it seems to lock up, unable to refresh, unable to exit Safari. I have to force quit and shutdown to try and get control back. Occasionally even after the shut down it will still lock up.

MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

    @nemtrelak21

The majority of the posts you linked to appear to discuss freezes introduced for some users with 10.11.4. Several also don't mention the specifics of the freezing or mention separate symptoms. The discussion here was centered around ongoing freezes that we were hoping 10.11.4 would fix when a tab in Safari containing an embedded HTML5 video was closed or switched from.

Particularly as to why such a big fix would come so soon after the ideal moment of a an OSX point release? I'm presuming that the official release of Safari 9.1 will follow soon after this preview/beta version.

FWIW, Safari 9.1.1 is considered a Technology preview and is not a beta of 9.1. You can run them together for example.

Apologies, I had thought the technology preview was repackaged public beta of sorts.

No need to apologize. I was just clarifying.

Safari Technology Preview for Mac OS X Released, Aimed at Developers

    Posted: 30 Mar 2016 11:01 AM PDT

Apple has released a new developer focused version of Safari, called Safari Technology Preview. The new browser is aimed at more advanced Mac users who want to “get a sneak peak at upcoming web technologies in OS X and iOS” and test those experimental technologies on websites, web applications, and with Safari extensions and plug-ins. ... Apologies, Louis, I can't tell what your comments are and what you've just pasted from the text formatting and punctuation you've used. The article you link to suggests the technology preview solves freezing issues that were introduced with OSX 10.11.4. This is a different freezing issue that existed before 10.11.4. That's not to say that it won't fix the tab closing issue either (it appears to for Tarti) but it's a separate issue.

That said, it appears you've replied to the original post which is five months old, so I doubt you're following the discussion.

Started using safari tech preview my self with flash and a lot of extensions on. Youtube solely on tech preview, will give update later. But you have to know i haven't had mini freeze in around two months.

Installed the Technology Preview (9.1.1). Wow, it's so much faster on most of the heavy sites that were sluggish and slow in 9.1. And the scrolling is so robust. Will test if it's gonna freeze on YouTube for several days.

I don't want to jinx it, but we may have a winner! Sometimes things seem to go smoothly for a while, but I have not been seen Safari Technology Preview crash yet. I tried opening a bunch of YouTube windows and table simultaneously with multiple videos playing. Then started closing windows and tabs, switching quickly in and out of Safari Technology Preview. No crashes...no hiccups. I've made STP my default browser.

If this problem is finally solved, I don't know what @palegreenghosts or I will do with the time we get back.

I just had my first freeze in Safari Technology Preview after, what, 2-3 days. So, it is not fixed. Seems to me it's a problem with cache corruption or something like this. Because when you clear all website data and restart it work fine for couple days (both release and TP version).

      STP works great!!
For Safari, go to preferences, Security, and turn off "Include Safari Suggestions." That seems to have fixed the Safari-inspired system crashes.

yeah... 3 days of happiness with STP and another freeze today... same as every time - closing a tab with youtube video.

So let's make it clear - Safari Technology Preview sadly did not solve the problem

all of you guys please report via tweets to Apple Safari developers - Ricky Mondello @rmondello  Jonathan Davis @jonathandavis.

maybe they will be able to make some changes. I've pasted the link to this thread in my tweet.

    cheers!

I've had the Safari Technology Preview since its release and no freeze so far.

I don't have Flash installed and I watch Youtube videos in HTML5 like all day long with switching/closing tabs.

    Sorry for ya!
