Uninstall magicJack

How do I uninstall magicJack ? Upgrade to El Capital rendered it useless, and a company agent told me the app will not, ever, be ungraded. Multiple internet searches give advice on uninstalling from older OS versions, but I can't find one with instructions that seem to work in El Capitan.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

If it helps, the app lives in /Users/[user]/.magicJack/Softphone/. Not sure how recent this is.

The live chat I just had with magicJack:

[support agent]: Hello, how may I help you?

[me]: Hello. I found that magicjack does not work on mac OS X El Capitan. I also found a discussions.apple.com thread stating that a magic jack agent told a customer that it will never be upgraded.

[me]: Is this correct information, and if so, will you credit me the remainder of my service fee since I can no longer use the product?

[support agent]: I apologize for the inconvenience you have encountered. Let me go ahead and assist you with that.

[support agent]: There are compatibility issues with El Capitan and magicJack. This has already been reported to our engineers and they are currently working on a fix.

[support agent]: But rest assured we are working on it to have this problem fixed as soon as possible.

[me]: What is the ETA, and is there a public announcement on the website for reference?

[support agent]: We don't have a specific timeframe as to when your issue will be fully resolved. we are working on it as fast as possible, we do value your business, [me].

[me]: Is there an announcement on your support site or anywhere that confirms magicjack's commitment to supporting magicjack on El Capitan?

[me]: A blog post?

[support agent]: Yes, we will.

[support agent]: We always update our website for all new products and services, please visit our website from time-to-time for new releases and updates.

[me]: Where?

[support agent]: At www.magicJack.com, [me].

[me]: Where will it be announced?

[me]: On a web page, on the blog?

[me]: There doesn't appear to be support content in the blog.

[support agent]: http://www.magicjack.com/index.html

[me]: Yes, that is the same thing as http://www.magicjack.com.

[me]: Is there anything in the support community that references this known issue?

[support agent]: Yes, or you can chat with us.

[support agent]: This is a known issue, and our engineers are still working on it.

[support agent]: You may chat us back so that once it has been updated, we can further notify you.

[me]: Yes, is there anything on the support section of your site or any community that references the known issue, or does this only "exist" if I live chat with someone?

[support agent]: Please try chatting us again after an hour or at your convenience.

[me]: It is not a notification if I have to pursue magicjack content rather than it being pushed or published.

[support agent]: Please disregard last message.

[me]: It will be fixed in an hour?

[me]: Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to write to me. I did a search and can't find the link on my computer to eliminate the magicJack (mJ) software. It's most likely buried using a different name or link, but some necessary part of it is with missing or in the wrong place or has been rendered non-functional thanks to the OS upgrade. The app continues to open when I boot up the computer so I'd really like to be rid of it, and my next task is to chat with them again, this time to see if I can get an uninstall from mJ since no other uninstall downloads found online actually work. In reading your interview with a mJ agent it looks as if you got the same run-around that I did. The first two times I talked with someone there I had the distinct impression that the "engineer" statements were an excuse to get rid of me. The third time I finally got the statement: "It's never going to be updated." Me: "not ever?" mJ agent: "No." I really think there aren't any "engineers" working on anything. I have a hunch their Apple customers are a small segment of their customer roster, given the low cost of the service and the large expense of Apple products, and probably few Apple people subscribe to magicJack! I have arranged for a more expensive service called Lingo but the hardware hasn't arrived yet so I don't know if there will be better results. I will post one way or the other.

I've had the same response, three times, from MagicJack after device stopped working with El Capitan:

15 October: "Unfortunately, we do not have an exact time frame as to how long it would take for our engineers to come up with a resolution, but I can assure you that they are working on this matter."

In live chats, they did not respond to repeated queries about getting a refund.

To all having problems with magicJak on el capitan: I gave up tring to get anywhere with the magicJack (mJ) unhelpful people and decided to go with a different system. It's called Lingo and I hope it works. I will post when I know. But I really wanted to rid my computer of mJ and and couldn't find any uninstall download on the internet the would even open. But...this morning I discovered how to get rid of it! It's easy. It just took some time thinking about it, I tried it, and it worked. So for anyone wanting to uninstall mJ, here's how I did it:

1. Open System Preferences. 2.Click Users and Groups. 3. Click on Login Items. 4. Right click on magicJack to reveal the words "Show in Finder." 5. A window comes up showing two items, the mJ app and another one. 6. Click on each and send them to the trash. 7. Empty trash. After doing this procedure I restarted my computer to see if it reallly worked, and Wallah! no more mJ opening on my screen! It's possible -- probable? there are bits hiding deep in the system that I have no way of finding, but I did get rid of the pesky app always opening when I booted up the computer.

I checked the CompleteUninstall.sh included in my link above, and it contains:

#!/bin/sh

# instalator files

rm -rf ~/.magicJack

rm -rf ~/MJInstlogs

rm -rf ~/Desktop/Start\ magicJack.app

# softphone files

rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/magicJack

# WebKit cache

rm -rf ~/Library/Caches/magicJack

I was able to delete these:

  • /Users/[user]/.magicJack/ (which included the two apps located in /Users/[user]/.magicJack/Softphone)
  • /Users/[user]/Library/Preferences/magicJack

These didn't exist:

  • /Users/[user]/MJInstlogs/
  • /Users/[user]/Library/Caches/magicJack

And I had already deleted the app shortcut from my desktop.

I'll keep using it with a regular phone plugged in, just not on my laptop.
