Extra desktop appears on login

I have an iMac, with a TV connected as an extra screen. This is set up in Sys Prefs > Displays as a second screen, with no mirroring.

I have 6 desktops in Mission Control.

Whenever I log in, a new desktop is created. If I don't delete it, it will still be there next time I log in, plus yet another new one. Sometimes I have ended up with half a dozen extra desktops ('cos I forgot to delete them earlier).

??? what is this about?

It's nuisance value only, but I do wish I didn't have to keep deleting unwanted desktops.

After some discussion with an Apple rep, I have finally decided that it is probably a handshake issue, since the TV and the imac are connected via an HDMI cable.

The new desktop that is created is a copy of the desktop on the TV, and the issue only happens when the computer is starting up..

I occasionally have a handshake issue between the DVD player and the TV, and I suspect that this is what is also happening here.
