How can I lock my margins so that images only stay within the desired part of the page?

I am trying to write an essay that contains some screenshots. I am new to the Pages app, having used Microsoft Word my whole life. In word, when you drag an image into the document, the image will automatically stay within the margins that you set up (usually 1-inch on all four sides). In Pages, when I put an image in the document, the app seems to think I would want the image at the very top of the page, right on the edge. I can manually move it so that it goes more where I want it, but I want images to automatically respect the margins and headers that I have set up.

I think this is more of a work around but it might help you nonetheless. I am not sure if there is a way to change the default import options for media.

Instead of dragging/dropping your image into the document, instead select Insert > Choose... (shortcut Command+Shift+V) from the menu and then select the image you want to insert. Pages will place that image inside of your margins at the location where you currently have the cursor.

To correct an image after you've inserted the image into the document, click on it, then look within the Format toolbar on the right side of the screen and go to the Arrange tab. Here you will see an option for how the image aligns with text. The default is for word wrap, but you may want In Line With Text. You also have the options for Stay On Page or Move With Text. Typically you'd want to use the option Move With Text so that your image is always next to the text you've inserted it with.

Ah, thank you. What you said about the default import options really gets at the problem. From what I remember, Microsoft Word would automatically format images the way I wanted them (and how I think most people would want them) when I dragged them in, so I guess this is just a small inconvenience of Pages. But anyway the technique you suggested definitely helps, so thanks!

I have observed that in Pages v5.5.3 on El Capitan (10.11.0), whether you use the Toolbar Media button to insert an image into Pages, or the Insert menu's Choose… method, the image is deposited between the margins, and if the insertion point is at the left margin, the image will be placed there. Otherwise, it will wander.

The above is true with Pages '09 v4.3 on El Capitan, again via the Insert menu's Choose… option. I have noticed that the Toolbar Media panel no longer offers iPhoto images for insertion. I had not run iPhoto since my update to El Capitan. Once I did so, and quit the application, then the iPhoto pictures were available again in the Pages '09 v4.3 Media panel. There are not insertable via a double-click, and the drag/drop approach does not necessarily obey insertion point, or margins.
