What does Keeping Messages Forever Mean?
HI,
I Have iphone 6 / IOS 9.02 and it says keep messages forever - in reality when you delete a text message it goes away forever, so what does this mean or refer to?
Thanks

As Ethan7988 said, they would be automatically deleted if you selected one of the other settings, 30 days or 1 year. If you manually delete them, they are deleted. This is just about action by the phone and iOS itself. I hope that explains it further.
Totslly makes sense .... Thank you so much , especially that screen shot because I always just assumed they would be there forever regardless of seeing "keep messages forever", always have been. Just through me off and couldn't imagine there was some "secret place" where millions were that were deleted. Thanks so much everyone! I have had iPhones forever but first time here and love it!! I prob have a million more questions 🙂 thx again
This is happening to me as well. But insight that I can provide is if you delete a message thread on iOS, its gone. But if you delete the same thread in Mac OS, the history will reappear when the conversation continues. Thus, keep history forever does work, but not the way we expect it to. Go figure. I wished Apple would join in on this conversation.
I believe it means the messages will not delete automatically.
thanks but once I delete my messages in my text messages / message place where you text they are gone which I like and do all the time "thus, keeping clean" or I would go crazy with long lists of texts - yikes! But I recently noticed that so I have it turned on cuz that's how it's set and don't see a place where all of these millions of texts / iMessages are at if that makes sense?
OH- demo? So you are saying just will stay in your text messages forever until you delete? You are showing me one from 2013??? 🙂 I would die ! I have 2 because I reply and basically delete unless in the midoe of a conversation or just need to remember to reply but don't feel like it etc.

Yes, that is what I am saying. I have one huge text string that has been going on with my wife since that date. I adore her and can't bear to delete her texts. 🙂 Seriously, I almost never delete text messages. I only text with a handful of people and the string with my wife is by far the longest one,
OK - this is SO lame but that gave me tears and is crazy because I just used this place for the first time and asked two questions because (this is a little out there but I'm so normal thus the fact that I don't pay attention or know about this stuff from friends and a guy just broke up w/ me out of nowhere), ok sorry this is not a psychology or weird place I realize but seriously it's been the hardest thing ever and one second crazy in love with me and the next out of nowhere did it in a way that I can't even say a word and so cold. I'm not a stalker yikes scary word but tried once to call and once to text and then saw that because I deleted all text messages and wanted to kinda read them but then didn't. I know I just shared way too much but was short term and that perfect feeling. I'm not young & dumb , I'm 43. SO the fact that my question was vague and you just said what you said was so weird (meaning it related), and just so you know the CUTEST thing ever!! You will have to tell her about this. Who says that? She is very lucky :-)
If you look at the other selections, it refers to how long you want to keep the messages before the automatically delete. A way to keep your Message box clean.
