how do I track a stolen iPad if I erase it for my protection

Someone stole my iPad. I was tracking it and made a police report once it got to a location w an address. I was afraid they would get some sensitive info so I decided to erase it but now I can't track it. Does apple have a way to track this device

iPad, iOS 4.3.2

No there isn't a way for Apple to track it. Also note that if you remove the device from your account then Activation Lock will be turned off and the thief would be able to use your iPad. See the quote below from If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support

Erase your device. To prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing device, you can erase it remotely. When you erase your device, all of your information (including credit or debit cards for Apple Pay) will be deleted from the device, and you won't be able to find it using Find My iPhone. After you erase a device, you can't track it. If you remove the device from your account after you erase it, Activation Lock will be turned off. This allows another person to activate and use your device.
