Q: Can I rent a movie from iTunes using macbook to watch on a plane?

I am traveling with my Macbook instead of either of my iPads and would like to rent a movie to watch on the plane. Someone mentioned that you can only watch rented movies on iPad or iPhone but that seems to be a poor solution from a good company. I'm hoping this is false and I can in fact watch a movie on a macbook while not connected or on wifi

    Of course you can.

You can Rent a movie on a computer just like you can rent it on anything else.

The movie will appear in your movies section of iTunes under rentals.

If you rent the movie on an iPad, then you can only ever watch it on the iPad, but if you rent it on a computer, it can be watched on the computer, or transfer to another device. The only limitation is it can only exist on one device, so once transferred it will disappear form the computer. You cannot transfer a rental out of an iOS device.
