Q: Unsupported library on Yosemite

Hello guys,

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.11 El Capitan from Yosemite from App Store. However I did not like it and decided to downgrade it to Yosemite. I took a backup of the photoslibrary file from the pictures folde. Now it is downgraded to Yosemite. I copied tne entire library file to my pictures folder in mac. When I try to open it, It gives me the error saying "UNSUPPORTED LIBRARY The Library Photos Library.photoslibrary is from a newer version of photos please upgrade photos to open the library"

Please help me.

I have almost 90GB of photos stored in there. I can't afford to lose them.

thanks in Advance.

What I want to know is, can I not just extract the data from the package contents in the version 1.2 and then place that data inside the package contents of the version 1.0.1?

The library is a complex environment of databases, links and other interactive files.  Just replacing components from one into another will kill the library.

    If you want to import the photos in your 1.2 library into your 1.0.1 library you can do the following;

1 - go inside the 1.2 library package and move or copy the Masters folder to the Desktop.

2 - launch Photos 1.0.1 and open your 1.0.1 library.

3 - drag the subfolders from the 1.2 library's Masters folder into the open window of your 1.0.2 library.  That will import the photos into that library.  If there are any exact duplicate files Photos should give you this warning:

    Photos001.jpg

Click the Apply to all duplicates checkbox and then the Don't Import button.

    Thanks Old Toad,

I'm sure I fully understand but I'll give it a go.  At least I know I have all of my pictures saved, it's just getting them back into Yosemite, I really dont see myself upgrading to El Capitan anytime soon.

I'll let you know how I get on.

    Thanks

    Dan

    Hello,,
I would like to share with you the solution I have used to solve the problem with Iphoto.
I hope it could help someone. I am sorry but I am not an expert.

I have an old Mac (2009). After migration to El Captan, the system became extremely slow and some app often frozen. After trying a lot of solution to repair El Captan I have decided the downgrade to Yosemite. Thanks to TM, not big problems.
I have OS backup, Media and Photo libraries on external HDs.

Time Machine has moved back the system to a date before the upgrade to El Captan.
Before to do this, I have saved all files and documents created or modified after upgrade.

After downgrade to Yosemite, it was quite easy to re-import on  ITunes library only the music that was saved on external HD after the date of migration to El Captan.

The unpleasant surprise came from Photo (version Yosemite) that was not able to open the library created on El Captan.

The only solution seemed to import once more the photos in a new library loosing all albums, metadata, etc.

90 GB of memories well organized. Terrible.

This is the solution I have used. For sure not perfect and time consuming, but the best I was able to find. Condition to use this method is to have also the Iphoto library when migrated to Photo. You should have because El Captan di not delete or modify it.

On my external HD I have two libraries. The above mentioned Iphoto and the one I was using in El Captan. Now no more compatible.

These are the steps I have followed
    1) Create a new Photo library in Yosemite.
    2) Import in the new library the photos from folder master of  Photo library (El Captan). Right click - show content – copy and paste the folder master. It takes quite a long time (I could import only folders 2015 and 2016 but I preferred to import all folders). After this I have in the new library all my photos but without any organization, album, etc
    3) Open Iphoto and the old library before migration to Photo. In this case it is well organize with albums, metadata, etc. In particular I could see the date of the last photos imported in such library (in my case was 1st of May 2015). Close Iphoto.
    4) Open the new Photo  library and export in a new folder on desktop all the photos created after migration from Iphoto (in my case the 1st of May 2015). I have used export as original. Close Photo
    5) Open once more Iphoto and import in the library the photo from the folder on desktop. In this way you have in old Iphoto library, all photos. Now you could re-organize only the last photos imported after migration (in my case from 1st of May 2015) and not a full library. Save the library
    6) Delete the new Photo library created at point 1 (you just needed to take out from the not supported El Captan library the photos stored after migration from Iphoto).
    7) right click on IPhoto library and open with Photo. Photo will import all photos including album, event, etc. it takes time but at the end you have a well organize Photo library in Yosemite. the IPhoto library wouldn't be modified.

Hope not confusing you too much. Bye

I recently upgraded to El Capitan and absolutely regret it. I was able to access my photos, but anytime I chose videos, panoramic, etc. Photos would freeze. My Photos library is stored on an external drive because my library is too large to keep on my laptop. I even went out and bought a new drive thinking it was an issue with the lack of a compatible El Capitan software update for the drive. But now, I see that that probably isn't the case.

So I downgraded back to Yosemite and now have a similar problem to yours when you downgraded. I have been trying to fix this for days now. Did any of these solutions work for you? Were you able to "downgrade" your Photos library?

My Photos library is stored on an external drive because my library is too large to keep on my laptop.

How is that extreme drive formatted?  It must be formatted as shown in this screenshot:

I have had both external hard drives formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the start.

However, I did not have the Ignore ownership on this volume checked, nor did I have the padlock unlocked. I did that to both EHDs, but I am still receiving this message when trying to copy my Photos Library from one drive to the other:

The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8084).

As I keep trying, it also seems to alternate with this message:

The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Photos Library - Main” can’t be read or written.

    (Error code -36)

When I use the "Terminal dot_clean(space)(drag file here)RETURN" method, it reverts to the (error code -8084) message.

Any advice for these types of error codes?
