Yes, but only a 32-bit edition of Windows XP or Vista.

Oh bum. I mean, thank you. I guess would have to be XP then. I can't do Vista, it was a nightmare.
Is there anything else I really need to know before doing this, Niel? Things to watch out for . . .

Thank you, Niel. Only doing it on this MacBook because much too nervous to risk my Imac. And no choice: have part-time employer who insists.

Thank you BobTheFisherman. I'll go to the Boot Camp community if installation doesn't go according to plan. At the moment I've ordered a 32 bit edition of Windows XP and am keeping my fingers crossed. But I think I may need to get hold of an external mouse too --  read this somewhere. But equally maykbe not.

Go to to the Boot Camp community. All your questions are answered there. Don't wait to go there until you mess up the install. You won't need an external mouse.

I think all my questions are answered for the moment. I looked at the Boot Camp Community already but there are too many problems going on there. I don't see why I should mess up the install. I've read the instructions and it looks straightforward enough. But I haven't got the software to install yet! Anyway, thanks for your advice, and especially for the links.

OK. Good luck. FYI here are the instructions taken from the Boot Camp community for installing XP on 10.5.

BobtheFisherman, and/or Niel, I regret to say I am back. I've searched for the answer to this one too, but not found it, though have already tried a number of things.

I successfully installed Windows XP and everything works fine. But I can't get the broadband connection to work through Windows, though it recognises my network.

I have done various things and at one point did get the 'Validating Identity' message (which seems to be an XP problem) to change to something like 'little or no connection'. It did seem to accept the WPA key after various elaborate attempts, but I have never got as far as being asked for the password, which is what I would expect. I'm using a Netgear router -- could it be that I need to set up the router again using the disk while opening in Windows?

Or could it be a driver problem? The wifi access is still working fine on the machine from OSX if I swap back.

Any ideas welcomed. Should I have opened another question or it is okay to continue in this thread? Sorry to come back so soon!

Don't worry guys, if you come back to this. I posted the question elsewhere, then spent several hours messing about and finally solved the problem. I had to click the 'repair connection' button, and watch Windows try to repair it, which it couldn't. Then I closed down the router and started it again, and let it try again -- and it failed again. Then tried it with the ethernet cable connected, and failed again. Then tried one more time in despair, and it connected, though it still was flashing a message saying poor connectivity.

So now it's fine. I just have to work out how the **** to keep my doings on Windows XP free from hackers and viruses.

I wouldn't be doing this at all, had one of my employers not insisted I use Lotus, and I didn't want to partition my Imac, which could run a more recent copy of Windows. But you don't need to know any of this...
