Q: FIPS Kernel POST Failed!

Came back from vacation, started up my iMac, and got a white apple screen with inverted white on black text:

I think the "Return Address" may refer to a Word document that I had open. I tried restarting after unplugging the iMac and all USB/FireWire connections. Also tried holding Shift while restarting. Also tried holding Command+Option+P+R while restarting & it  gave me four options.  I've verified the hard drive and it found no problems. Tried  rebooting from Time Machine backup, but it was searching forever...

Help?

    Please post the complete Kernel Panic message and we can look for clues. KPs can be tough to track down because they can be caused by both hardware and software. If we can look at the complete message then we may get a better idea. You can get the complete KP by reading and following the directions in Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic - Apple Support

    Thanks! I read that article before posting my problem but can't locate the log as my iMac is stuck on the white screen. Is there a way to get to it?

    Try resetting the PRAM per iMac SMC and PRAM reset.

     

    If the PRAM reset does not work and you use OS X 0.7.5 or later then boot into the Recovery Partition (Command + R) and open Disk Utilities and repair Disk. If errors appear after 2-3 passes, then you know you have to replace the HD. If no errors appear, try reinstalling OS X.

    By doing the PRAM reset, I got to Disk Utility and verified the HD. "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK."

    Then I repaired the disk. "File system check exit code is 0. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."

     

    After seeing that I only have 10.97gb available, is that part of the problem? Do I need to reinstall OS X?

    That could be part of the issue, why not offload some large libraries such as your photos, music and movies to an EHD. That may help quite a bit.

    I Think that must be the issue. I tried reinstalling OS X Yosemite and can't because an additional 3,43 gb of space is needed to install. How can I remove items from the HD when it's in this state?

    Try to restart the computer in Safe Mode (hold down Shift key until it restarts) DO NOT move files to your backup HD. Use a EHD that you use for other storage. If you don't have one, then get one!

    I have a few! Thanks, hoping it works! Tried restarting in safe mode a few days ago, and it was still on the white screen.

    If you have another Mac available you can restart in Target Disk Mode and manually move files that way .
