new magic track pad will not pair

Brand new bought today and have plugged in via USB and turned on and it will not pair. It will only allow me move arrow and select. No scroll and no paring. If I disconnect the lightning socket, it stops dead.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.6), iMac i7 21" 16gb ram
