numbers join two columns WITHOUT a space?

I just want to make a username my taking the first letter of a column and adding it to a second column

If I use the normal A&B method, where A is the first character of a column

User uploaded file

It adds a space

User uploaded file

If I use the concatenate method, where I put a comma but no space between elements:

User uploaded file

it adds a space

User uploaded file

Neither B2 or C2 have spaces around them, and there are no spaces in either the concatenate or simple join formula.

From my using the keyboard arrow keys IN numbers, also cutting and pasting the fields to external text editors, also deleting the values and typing them in again, I do not have any spaces. I can make a new numbers file, add the letter A in column 1, the letter B in column 2, and the forumula =CONCATENATE(A1,B2) into column3 and it puts in a space beteen A and B

I've tried to replicate with CONCATENATE and &. No mystery spaces here.

So I suggest double-clicking that Down cell to edit it, moving the cursor one space to the right with the right arrow key, hitting the delete key, and then hitting return. That should remove what really does appear to be a space before the D. (You can see it because the D is not next to the left border of the cell the way the R is in its cell.)
