Q: My brand new AirPort Extreme won't connect to my Arris TM1602.

Heads up: I'm unfamiliar with lots of the jargon I'm seeing in these forums, so be gentle.

Trying to connect my Macbook Pro (OS X 10.6.8) or an iPhone 4s to our brand new AirPort Extreme via an Arris TM1602 modem for the first time.

I can't for the life of me get the AirPort Extreme to stop blinking and connect to the above devices. It's not the modem, because when I plug the old router back into it, wifi works fine.

I tried a hard reset, and I've tried accessing the AirPort Utility from both the Pro and the phone. The phone app simply spins and says some thing like, "Can't find a base station." The Macbook download gave me warnings about needing a newer version, but then the newer version wouldn't play nicely with my OS.

Help.

    Hello pprimrose,

It sounds like you are trying to setup a new AirPort Extreme but can't seem to do it with either your iPhone or Mac.

Note the system requirements for setting up the base station are different than for just using it.

AirPort Extreme 802.11ac - Technical Specifications

    Setup and Administration

    • iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
    • Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3

    Wireless Device Access

    • Any Wi‑Fi-enabled device that uses the 802.11a/b/g/n/ac specification

Given your MacBook Pro has OS X 10.6.8 it sounds like you will want to configure the AirPort Extreme with your iPhone but make sure you have the current version of the AirPort Utility.

AirPort Utility on the App Store

Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

If you already have the latest AirPort Utility for the iPhone, this may help.

AirPort base station doesn't appear in AirPort Utility 1.3 for iOS - Apple Support

If you are setting up a new or reset AirPort base station, it won't appear in AirPort Utility for iOS until it has been configured in Wi-Fi Settings:

    1. Tap Settings, then tap Wi-Fi.
    2. Under “Set up an AirPort base station,” tap the name of your base station.
    3. Follow the onscreen instructions.

    Take care.
