Mac OS Startup : so many strange messages in consol !

Hi,

Since I updated to El Capitan, I meet few problem that require me to dive in the console's logs.

I recently solved one about postfix.master. Thanks to you !

I was surprise by many unexpected logs that may describe errors, or alert, or something that was not expected. About 80% of the log !

Anyone to give me clue about those messages ?

Should I wonder most of them ?

I did a regular update from App Store, downloading installing over Mavericks.

Actually, I am trying to resolve this : El capitan slow to connect the network

Maybe I was wrong with the title ? "it's look like" the network connection is slow.

When I was working with Mavericks, I used to start the same group of applications using the dock (mouse click) : iTunes, Safari, Mail (Boinc start is automatic)

Now with El Capitan the all get stuck because there is no net connection, also they start quicker than before.

This is why I start digging inside the startup log ; I was looking for some error preventing the OS to get a valid net connection before those app start.

Oct 18, 2015 2:35 AM in response to greg sahli

Are you talking about those I can manage through Pref > User > StratUp ?

I have only two of them (Boinc und and a little tool MenuMeters).

Nothing different without them ....

I am concerned about all those startup items that are "invisible", directly link to the system...

Actually I managed to get ride of the VirtualBox messages. This one was easy : I re-installed this old software, then uninstall it. It did the job by removing those "deamons"...

Unfortunately most of the others seems to come from Apple. I am a little bit surprised that an OS start with so many errors&warning ?

My Mac is old and I do a lot of thing on it. So I understand the os may be corrupted a little through time.

I don't understand why a fresh install (Le Capitan) does not fix all that stuff ...

I guess I won't get an easy "answer" ...

Thanks

I recommend you get etrecheck and run it - it tells us about most things that are running, including startup - gives a more complete picture.

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Note:

The reason I asked about how you installed El Cap, is that the default "install over" a previous version leaves many pref/settings files in place. These could result in the errors you see. A clean install (backup, erase, install from USB installer, selective migrate/restore from backup) may reduce some errors.

Nice software.

I am digging inside.I will take the opportunity to clean up old software partially or improperly uninstalled...

The only real bogue i found is

Details show me the already known message

I do have this also it does not seem too important

[engagé] com.apple.airplaydiagnostics.server.mac.plist - /AppleInternal/Applications/AirPlayDiagnostics.app/Contents/Resources/AirPlayDi agnosticsServer : Logiciel non-trouvé

And the awaiting bogue with BOINC ..

I will post under BOINC Forum...

Thanks.

There's a lot there -

tun/tap, tunnelblick and teamviewer are legitimate software, but they have been used by bad people to control other people's Macs. Did you install these for your own use?

Extra lines in the /etc/hosts file will interfere with normal DNS lookup. They can prevent apple security updates (and normal updates), and prevent normal DNS lookup for many normal network accesses. If you didn't make changes to that yourself, you've had something bad happen to your Mac.

Let us know about these.

Hi Greg,

Teamviewer was installed for test purpose ; I may uninstall it ...

Not sure : Tun / Tap is related to Tunnelblick ? If not I may uninstall them (how ?) ...

I need VPN from time to time and I used different soft as the old Hotspot Shield or directly PPTP. I want to keep Tunnelblick.

I used to have a lot of Apache Virtual host for web development purpose.... I may check those old entries.

I would like to clarify the origine of this post : I try to solve this annoying problem :El capitan slow to connect the network

So I start to dig inside the startup process, and discover those messages...

After some update and clean install / un-install I still got this problem : I need to wait about 20 seconds to get the net connection.

Starting the Mac (to the login screen) go faster than before the update from Mavericks ; I was wondering if the connection to Internet occurred before or after the login session ? Anyway, I don't think Mavericks was 20 seconds longer to start ...

(I'm a Tunnelblick developer.)

Tunnelblick and its tun/tap kexts are unlikely to be the cause of a slow startup of the network, but if you use only Hotspot Shield and a PPTP VPN, then you don't need Tunnelblick. See Uninstalling Tunnelblick for instructions to completely uninstall it.

However, the "foo.tun" and "foo.tap" kexts are obsolete and should be removed. They are very likely to be so old that they will crash recent version of OS X. You can remove them by copy/pasting the following command into /Applications/Utilities/Terminal:

sudo rm -f /Library/Extensions/foo.tun /Library/Extensions/foo.tap

(You must run this command as an "admin" user, not as a "standard" user. It will ask for your password; type it in and then press the "enter/return" key on the keyboard. Nothing will be shown as you type, not even asterisk ("*") characters.)

The following is a much more detailed discussion of tun/tap kexts and Tunnelblick's impact on startup.

Tunnelblick contains (within the application itself) tun and tap kexts, which it may load and unload dynamically if needed when you connect to a VPN. (On OS X 10.6.8 and higher, the tun kext is only loaded if certain extremely rare OpenVPN options are used, and the tap kext is only loaded if you are using a tap connection.) You also have three other tun/tap kexts, one of which comes from HotSpot Shield; the other two (foo.tun and foo.tap) are old and obsolete and should be removed as described above. None of the tun/tap kexts are loaded (that is, none are active), so none of them are likely to be the source of the problem.

Tunnelblick has two other "startup" items, neither of which are related to slow network startup:

  • "net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.LaunchAtLogin.plist" is loaded when you log in. It runs a very short shell script (which you can look at; it is at /Applications/Tunnelblick.app/Contents/Resources/launchAtLogin.sh. It checks a preference and looks for OpenVPN processes, then either launches Tunnelblick and exits or just exits. Thus, it executes more-or-less instantly, has negligible impact on the system, and has nothing to do with any network software.
  • "net.tunnelblick.tunnelblick.tunnelblickd.plist" is loaded when the computer starts up and causes a "daemon" to wait for input from Tunnelblick. If you don't launch Tunnelblick, nothing is sent to the daemon and it never executes.

Hi jkbull

thanks for those interesting informations.

Following your instructions I removed the old foo.tap & foo.tun...

I don't use Hotspot Shield anymore. I will try to install / uninstall properly Hotspotshield so it's tun & tap are withdraw.

I am very happy with Tunnelblick !

I use it from time to time and it is always start on demand after my iMac is started.

I understood it can't be responsible for my startup problem ...

Well .... the delay before accessing internet stay a mystery :-/
