This is the latest information for the latest version of iTunes, 12.5.5 and the Mac.

Mac System Requirements

  • Mac computer with an Intel processor
  • To play 720p HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor is required
  • To play 1080p HD video, a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 2GB of RAM is required
  • Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater; 1280x800 or greater is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
  • Broadband Internet connection to use Apple Music, the iTunes Store, and iTunes Extras
  • Apple combo drive or SuperDrive to create audio, MP3, or back-up CDs; some non-Apple CD-RW recorders may also work. Songs from the Apple Music catalog cannot be burned to a CD.

  • OS X version 10.9.5 or later
  • 400MB of available disk space
  • Apple Music, Apple Music Radio, iTunes in the Cloud, and iTunes Match availability may vary by country
  • iTunes Extras require OS X version 10.10.3 or later

It requires OS X 10.9.5 or higher for iOS 10.x, and you do not have that.

I am getting the same error message when I try to sync my new iPhone 6s with my MacBook Air. The iPhone cannot be used because it requires a newer version of iTunes. I checked the computer and I have OS X Version 10.8.5. I have IOS 10.2.1 on the iPhone. Everything is up to date as far as I can tell, but I still get the same message. I am really frustrated because I have a lot of music I ripped from my CD's on the MacBook but I cannot get them to my iPhone. I was an Apple convert because everything used to work easily and flawlessly, but now I have spent a lot of time spinning my wheels on this and getting nowhere. I hope someone can help.

The iPhone 6 tech specs > http://www.apple.com/iphone-6/specs/

System Requirements:

Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:

Which means you need to upgrade your Mac to v10.8.5 Mountain Lion or later.

See if your Mac meets v10.8 requirements > System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion

Mountain Lion can be purchased from Apple > OS X Mountain Lion - Apple

You can avoid purchasing Mountain Lion if your Mac can upgrade directly to v10.11 El Capitan.

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or newer)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or newer)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or newer), (15-inch, Mid / Late 2007 or newer), (17-inch, Late 2007 or newer)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

El Capitan is free and available for download at the App Store which should be available on a Mac running v10.6.8.

With either Mountain Lion or El Capitan installed, you will have the latest version of iTunes so you can sync your iPhone 6s.

If you do upgrade, make sure to backup your important data first.
