If its running 5.1.1 its a 3rd Generation iPod Touch.
A second gen cannot run iOS 5.1.1.

The 2nd generation iPod Touch tops out to iOS 4.3.1 and cannot be upgraded any farther.
I just, recently, upgraded my 2nd Gen iPod Touch (only an 8 GB storage model) to a 64 GB, 6th generation iPod Touch.
What a drastic difference!!!
Cameras (8 mp back camera, 1.5 mp front facing FaceTime camera)(no cameras on the 2nd gen iPod Touch),much, MUCH better and larger storage capacity, retina display, faster processor (Apple's own A8 CPU runnng at 1.1 GHz) (versus 523 MHz on 2nd Gen iPod Touch) and lots more internal RAM (1GB of RAM)(only 128 MBs of RAM in 2nd Gen iPod Touch).
Plus, the specs of the 6th generation iPod Touch are very close to the specs of the current iPhone 6 models at half the price!
The new 6th gen iPod Touch is a bargain, even for the higher storage model versions!
The 2G tops out a iOS 4.2.1
