Oct 27, 2015 11:30 PM in response to Kevin Callahanby MalenySteve,I am finding this hit and miss as well. Sometimes it works every time, and then a minute later I cannot get a drag and drop at all. Apple really needs to look at this. I wonder if they had any beta testing with non experienced outsiders. I assume not, probably just people within their own R&D environment.

Oct 28, 2015 10:18 AM in response to MalenySteveby Kevin Callahan,Did you perchance install the El Capitan beta via the beta program or dev program? A friend has been running the beta releases of El Capitan. His trackpad 2 never worked beyond single mouse mode. He then took the trackpad 2 to an iMac with a release version of El Capitan and the trackpad 2 worked perfectly well and as expected. So it appears the trackpad 2 is not the issue, rather some kext or other file in the beta that may be causing it, at least in his particular case. He is investigating.

Oct 28, 2015 10:57 AM in response to Kevin Callahanby johnfrompetoskey,No, I never participated in any of the beta versions. I purchased the Trackpad 2 after I had installed the release version of El Capitan (and the subsequent updates).

Oct 29, 2015 9:43 AM in response to Tim Hill1by commodorecrush,This works. I'm having the same issues though. I've found the new MT2 has many bugs. I constantly lose the ability to drag and drop files, pinch to zoom, etc. Then they just start working again.
One thing that works for dragging and dropping (for me at least) is just a 3 finger drag on a file or files. I'd rather just click and drag though.
I feel like they rushed this out. For the cost, it's kind of ridiculous that simple features aren't working the way they should. My old MT worked flawlessly, so I figured this would too.

Oct 30, 2015 12:29 PM in response to commodorecrushby k_ryan,Attracted by the larger size and haptic feedback, I sold my old Magic Trackpad and purchased the new Magic Trackpad 2. Currently it is disappointing.
I see others are experiencing problems with drag and drop. Unreliable drag and drop is my number one complaint. Sometimes it works, other times same screen same work session drag and drop fails to "grasp" the highlighted icon so dragging is impossible. After many, many tries it eventually drags.
I did find one of the posts listed the solution as returning the trackpad as defective. The poster reported the new replacement worked perfectly.
I was using the El Capitan beta but when Version 10.11.1 released to production I wiped my hard drive and did the full install of 10.11.1 so I can completely rule out remnants of beta code causing issues.
I will update this as soon as the problem resolves for me.

Oct 31, 2015 4:04 PM in response to k_ryanby k_ryan,Today, 10/31 I exchanged my problematic Magic Trackpad 2 for another new Magic Trackpad 2 at the local Apple Store. My drag and drop problem has been resolved. Drag and Drop first time, every time plus all other functions work without any problems. This is not very scientific but my problem appeared to be hardware specific.

Nov 1, 2015 1:05 AM in response to commodorecrushby MalenySteve,I have been using it for a few days more now and am getting used to making the drag and drop work pretty well most of the time. I am sure that Apple will refine the software with a future update. I doubt with the quality control they have in production that the issue is related to one trackpad being constructed any better than any other.

Nov 1, 2015 7:25 AM in response to k_ryanby k_ryan,I do not advocate everyone running out to exchange a supposedly faulty Magic Trackpad 2, however after exchanging mine yesterday I have yet to incur one problem with the drag and drop feature. Last night and this AM I have "dragged and dropped" at least 100 times and not once have a failure.
I am using a 2012 Mac mini i7 with a clean install of production El Capitan 10.11.1 I removed the new Magic Trackpad 2 from the box and the Mac recognized it and that is all I have done. As far as settings, the settings appear to be the exact same settings on the new trackpad that I had made when I was suffering with the previous Magic Trackpad 2.
To be specific, when using the "flawed" Magic Trackpad 2, I would hover on the icon of the file I wanted to drag, lightly depress the trackpad and about two out of five tries it would "grab" the icon allowing me to move it. Most of the time I would slide my finger to drag the file only to find the file would not move. I would try and try again and finally the file would "drag". By contrast, I had done this successfully millions of times with my battery powered Magic Trackpad.
Now with this "new" one that I obtained yesterday I am back to dragging and dropping with the exact same reliability of my old battery powered Magic Trackpad.
I wish there was a more scientific conclusion to offer but I truly believe I did have a defective Magic Trackpad 2.
Six Sigma strives for below 3.4 defects per million opportunities. It is reasonable to accept some defective Magic Trackpad 2 products are out there.

Nov 1, 2015 2:24 PM in response to Kevin Callahanby scsmithphoto,I read through all of the replies and was bedeviled by this issue until I removed the Magic Trackpad from this Mac Pro (via Bluetooth Preferences) and re-paired it. This has, for the moment, solved the drag and drop problem. I treated it like a new, exchanged trackpad. (This saved me a trip to the Best Buy to exchange it.) My guess is, it's a bluetooth / driver issue and not a hardware issue.
I will continue to follow this thread.

Nov 2, 2015 9:45 AM in response to scsmithphotoby Mike Zwick,I have noticed that the inability to move a file seems to occur in the "List" view. The behavior is intermittent, although I seem to be able to cause the behavior by selecting a file in list view (but not selecting on the icon) and then moving the cursor to the icon and attempting to move the file. The problem occurs solely when I use my thumb and forefinger to move a file. I can always use three fingers to select and move the file (irrespective of how I initially highlight the file). This seems like a software bug to me.

Nov 2, 2015 11:31 AM in response to Mike Zwickby k_ryan,I work exclusively in the List view and after exchanging the "intermittent" Magic Trackpad 2 for "a new one" I am happy to report this has become a non-issue for me. Drag and Drop works perfectly as it did with my battery powered Magic Trackpad. Doesn't matter where I select the file, Drag and Drop simply works every time.
I suggest you try the recommendation from "scsmithphoto". His is basically the same procedure I followed when I returned the "intermittent" Magic Trackpad 2 to the Apple Store. I removed the "intermittent" Magic Trackpad 2 via Bluetooth Preferences and when I returned with the new Magic Trackpad 2 the Mac recognized it and I have not touched the settings since. Perhaps a remove and re-install will help your situation.

Nov 2, 2015 11:36 AM in response to scsmithphotoby Derick Fay,Wow un-pairing and re-pairing solved the problem instantly! Hopefully this will stick.
(edit)
Well....it worked for a minute or so. Then it stopped. Then I un-paired and re-paired and it worked. Then stopped again.

Nov 2, 2015 11:41 AM in response to Derick Fayby Tim Hill1,Good grief!
I was skeptical that re-pairing would fix anything .. but it worked! As noted, I just deleted by Magic Trackpad 2 (in Preferences > Bluetooth), then plugged it in again via the lightning cable to re-pair. And amazingly drag+drop now works just the way it should.
Bizarre, but fixed. I have no idea how this can work, other than perhaps to recalibrate some internal driver for the force touch.
