Q: Error installing El Capitan after Time Machine restore

I'm attempting to install El Capitan on a Mid 2010 Mac Pro and am running into a lot of issues. During the initial install I experienced a kernel panic because I had an outdated driver for an outdated PCI card. I removed the card and restored my Time Machine back to OS X Yosemite v 10.10.5 then I deleted the outdated driver. There was also a problem with PostgreSQL after I restored from Time Machine where it kept asking to allow it to accept incoming connections. I downloaded El Capitan again v 10.11.0.1 upon installation I came to this screen:

Here are the log errors:

1. Oct 16 12:35:54 user InstallAssistant[1531]: Package Authoring Warning: The installer script defines but doesn't use (and can't install) package id com.apple.pkg.OSUpgrade version 10.11.0.1.

2. Oct 16 12:37:02 user InstallAssistantTool[1546]: Couldn't bless the installation disk: /

I attempted to reset the system date as suggested in this thread: OS X El Capitan install, but that was unsuccessful, then I tried installing from a thumb drive and in safe mode both of which stopped working when they came to that screen. Then I tried installing from the boot menu and it again froze on the same screen.

Any ideas what I should do or what could be causing the problem? Thank you!

I have some additional information that may be useful...

    1. The error occurs right before the system goes to restart during the install

    2. When I delete the "Install OS X El Capitan" app and re-download it from the app store it doesn't automatically launch. It says "An error has occurred" please see below.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

I still haven't resolved this issue, but I've learned a few things that may be helpful. I have Windows installed on a separate drive on my Mac Pro and I just updated it to Windows 10 before this issue began. I think a windows driver may be causing the update problem. I tried removing all of the PCI cards and unplugging everything to try and find the source of the problem. After removing everything and putting in the old RAM and graphics card I'm still having the same issues. This leads me to belive it is a problem with the motherboard. I followed the instructions to create a Firmware Restoration CD: About the Firmware Restoration CD (Intel-based Macs) - Apple Support, but I wasn't able to get the computer to blink 3 times and open the tray. It just blinked a bunch of times and then beeped then booted normally.

Here are a few other things I've noticed,

    1. My hard drive is called EFI Boot not Macintosh HD

    EFIBoot.jpg

    2. When I rename EFI Boot to Macintosh HD and choose it as the startup disk it says it has a problem "blessing" it:

    3. I was able to update to El Capitan by plugging my the hard drive into my MacBook Pro and holding the alt key to load the drive via USB. It was successful:

    success.jpg

    4. When I put the updated hard drive in the Mac Pro it freezes right before the login screen appears:

I also did a clean install of El Capitan on a regular hard drive (I had been using a SSD before) It froze on the same screen. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. When I Time Machine back to Yosimite everything appears to work fine again. If it is a problem with the motherboard firmware how can I install it if the three flash, three beep, three flash thing isn't happening?

    Thank you!

Ok I have finally figured out my own problem. So if someone, someday reads this here you go...

When I upgraded to Windows 10 or when I had that kernel panic with an obsolete PCI card it must have stored some information in my NVRAM, which is part of the ram that stores such information. All I had to do was reset it using a simple keyboard shortcut: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You can read the full article here: How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support Hope this helps someone. I was finally able to upgrade to El Capitan.
