I recently updated my MacBook to El Capitan. Now whenever I plug in my iPod to the laptop it won't even read. I've tested the USB ports with other peripherals and they all work except for the iPod. Please help!

I read and tried different solutions including resetting my iPod. Syncing was unstable or altogether impossible.
My problem was this aftermarket USB cable I was using. I tried an old, gnarled and frayed Apple USB cable and it synced immediately.
I'm using an original Apple cable, and it won't show up anywhere.
The OS knows its there somehow because when I simply unplug it, it says it was ejected improperly (or something similar)
Does it appear in the sidebar of a Finder window, under Devices?
I've got a 160 GB iPod and am also having problems synching. It wants to verify an iPod that's been used on this computer since day 1. Looks like Apple has screwed up another of its products. Getting really sick of an iPad that has pathetic wifi and now an iPod that won't synch because of a crappy iTunes version.
I've encountered similar problems with my iPod Classic. No more iSync in El Capitan, so more transferring calendar, contacts, etc.
