Headphones only work when EarPods play/pause button is pressed

I noticed this issue a month or so ago, roughly after I updated to iOS9. (I'm not too sure, since I didn't use my earphones a lot).

On my iPhone 5, when playing music or any sounds with my earpods plugged in, they didnt work too well (sounded almost like the bass wasn't playing. But when I press the play/pause button, they work perfectly fine? These earphones work fine with my laptop and other devices, it just seems to happen with my iPhone. This also happens with a pair of Sony headphones (that have a play/pause button on the cable), but when I change out that cable for a buttonless cable for those headphones, they work like normal? When playing music through speakers (no buttons on the cable) they also work fine. It just appears to be with headphones that have the buttons on.

Yeah, a repair seems like the best option for me... No luck with cleaning out the port... I've been surviving with an audio splitter between apple earpods and the port, but isn't really a solid solution to the issue.

Also, the front speaker (top of screen) isn't working. Since I have had my screen replaced twice, could it be that a dodgy headphone jack and front speaker may have happened when the screen has been repaired?

And how much would it cost to get a headphone port and front speaker replaced/repaired?
