How to completely disable Java?

Hello,

I had to install the latest version of Java 8 (against my wishes) so i could access an important web page / utility.

Now I will only access this very rarely, so whilst I wish to keep Java on the Mac I would like to disable it when I don´t need it (most of the time).

I went into the Java preferences - Security and unticked Enable Java content in the browser. It said "Java Disabled for Current User Only, only an Administrator can change the Enable Java in the browser setting for all users this computer." I am an Administrator so that seems strange.

So is this the best I can do? Or is there a better way to completely disable Java when its needed?

Thanks

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11)
