If I switch Apple ID, what will I lose?

Hello community,

My Macbook and iPod touch are signed in to my parents' Apple ID, and I am creating my own so I can keep my devices on a seperate ID to their's, and then help them set up Family Sharing (because I have no way of purchasing songs/apps).

If I sign into iMessages with this new ID, will I lose all the conversations I currently have through my parents' ID?

EDIT- Also, what else will/might I lose?

If you purchase songs and apps they are forever tied to the account that was used to purchase them in terms of replacement or updates. The latter of course is particularly important with apps.

As seventy one says, apps & songs purchased are stuck with the Apple ID that did the purchasing.

Devices are a bit different - see this > View and remove associated devices in iTunes - Apple Support

May i suggest that you have a 'family meeting' and PLAN your strategy for going forward. It may be that you are the main one that has apps/songs associated with your current Apple ID, making re-purchasing the primary issue.

It MAY be possible to make a new Apple ID that becomes the Family Admin and place the existing one (you) as a Family Member - BUT - I have never tried such a thing, maybe someone else has.

If it is possible, it may be a tad complicated.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I ended up using my own Apple ID for iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime, but I am still signed in to the App store and iTunes store with my parents' account so I can access all my (or our) purchased apps and music. All my iMessage conversations were kept, but when I sent my friend a new one, he didn't know who it was from (because from his point of view, it was coming from a different address).

Thanks again for the help though! I probably will end up sitting down with my parents and asking them about it.

You're welcome. It sounds about the same as changing your phone number!

Remember, you have the Strategy provided by Apple - Family Sharing. Now all ya'll need do is make a Plan, then work the Plan. (to totally separate stuff, there will likely be some repurchasing necessary, so keeping that at minimum is the biggest obstacle)
