HT201251: Authorize your computer in iTunes

Q: Why do I need to authorise and de-authorise computers for music? If I buy a CD I can play it on any device I like without authorizing it.

I have just spent several hours trying to set up my a notebook so my daughter can update her own iPOD shuffle.

I was stumped by this authorizing/deauthorizing business, I had to google it in the end to find out what to do (the menu is hidden by default when you install iTunes - a mandatory app to update iPOD shuffle).

My point here is what do I really own. I have CD's that I can play in any device anywhere so clearly I own that copy of the music, yet with iTunes the rules seem very different. Surely the act of logging into iTunes is sufficient for the poor old user to get at their stuff. If abuse is the issue then surely there are better ways of managing it.

I find the whole iTunes experience very painful and confusing. This is a shame as Apple hardware is so nice yet awful to configure and use.

iPod shuffle (2nd generation, Late 2008), Windows 7
