Most NLE systems today use gpu acceleration. Premiere and FCP fit this category, so if you're editing with one of these, then yes, I would definitely got for the beefier gpu. Just ordered one myself.

If only we new the answer! Best to wait until some bench marking is done. Keep an eye on Macrumors Forum, many are asking the same question myself included. My gut feeling says the extra for the 395X is not worth it but best be patient and see what the test comparison show up.

Yes I agree and that is the frustration 'cos like Eric I am poised to press the buy button. It is easy fro me to tell others wait! But! Gut feeling from what I am reading so far is unless you are a high end gamer etc. etc the 395 is best value. Remember in sunny (!!) Surrey, England the 395X is an extra £200 call it $300.

First, we must distinguish the difference between M395 and M395X! I'm NOT sure if the difference is only mem size!

I have to remind you that video mem size matters A LOT when u using a Virtual machine (such as Parallels). Actually, the mem size available to your Virtual Machine is roughly 1/4 - 1/2 of all the available hardware video memory

According to this video comparison of the top-of-the-line 2014 and 2015 iMacs, the 2014 model did have heat-related throttling issues. The 2015 runs cooler and did not throttle under the same test conditions that the 2014 model did.
