Q: Power Mac G5 won't finish booting up

My G5 no longer fully boots up.

It gets as far as a gray screen with vertical stripes and greyed out text. Here's what I see.

Zapping the PRAM makes no difference.

Moving the keyboard and mouse from a USB hub (and unplugging that) makes no difference.

The eject button does not open the DVD drawer.

Resetting the monitor cable makes no difference.

Is this a motherboard issue or something else?

Hardware issues are very tedious to troubleshoot -

you have replaced the monitor cable (? or did you simply re-SEAT teh connections?).

Next, I would try a different monitor (the goal at this point is to 'eliminate' the monitor as the cause).

You have posted in the PowerBOOK forum, so please verify your Mac model - Power MAC is a desktop.

If Power MAC, cracking open the case and jiggling the video connector cable (re-SEAT - unplug then replug) may help. You also may find it is a dirty bird on the inside of the case. Gentle vacuum + canned air.

Other folks more experienced with the seeing the image (this IS a PHOTO, not a screenshot, right?) may have more to add.

Here is a little more info on safe boot which bdaqua suggested.

    Try a safe boot.

Shutdown your machine.  Hold down the shift key.  Poweron.  Wait awhile; wait awhile while you harddrive

         is being checked.
