server preferences unable to authenticate to the open directory master

I have a Mac Mini server running OSX Server 10.6.8.

Not long ago, suddenly the VPN stopped working. When I try to login to server preferences I get the message that :

unable to authenticate to the open directory master. The computer record credentials could not be retrieved from the system keychain.

The older Server Admin app works and seems to connect just fine. The VPN won't connect though it seems to be active. I'm wondering if something got corrupted but I'm at a loss as to what...
